When She Danced in the Rain

When She Danced in the Rain is a powerful, #1 internationally bestselling novel based on a little-known chapter of World War II history that explores family secrets, forbidden love, and the deep scars left by war.

After inheriting her mother’s house by the sea, June returns to a small island in Norway, facing her own personal struggles around a toxic relationship. While cleaning the house, Juni discovers letters, photographs, and remnants of family secrets from the German occupation of Norway during WWII.

At the center of the story is her grandmother Tekla’s romantic relationship with Otto, an enemy German soldier, and the shame, persecution, and trauma Tekla faced when the relationship is discovered. Her Norwegian passport stripped from her, Tekla was deported to wartime East Germany where she found herself alone, pregnant with Juni’s mother, Lilla, and swept up in the chaos and violence as Russian forces pushed west into Germany.

Teige masterfully intertwines dramatic historical events with personal narratives, showing how the scars of the past continue to shape following generations until the pain is finally confronted.
