Small Yard, Wild Welcome

Make room for more life in the yard you already have.

You do not need a large property or years of gardening experience to create a thoughtful habitat for birds and pollinators. You need a manageable starting point, plants suited to your region, and a care routine that fits your life.

Small Yard, Wild Welcome shows you how to turn those essentials into a practical native planting. Learn to read your yard’s light, soil, and water; verify local plant choices; arrange flowers, grasses, shrubs, and trees at their mature size; and prepare the ground for a strong start.

Then look beyond the blooms. Discover how host plants, retained stems, and fallen leaves can support different stages of insect life. Make your garden safer for birds around windows, pets, and water. Build sensible routines for watering, weeds, seasonal maintenance, and gradual expansion.

With worked examples, clear decision tools, and links to university and conservation resources, this beginner’s guide helps you make informed choices without relying on a one-size-fits-all plant list.

Start with one patch. Learn its rhythms. Grow a garden you can care for-and a welcome that lasts beyond a single flowering season.
