Fabulous Flushing Boys

The Fabulous Flushing Boys tells the tale of twenty-two local boys from Flushing and Bayside, Queens, New York, who decided to form their own football team because their school did not offer them one. This is a story how from 1940 to 1942, how these boys, who were eighteen to twenty years old played ball until Pearl Harbor occurred. Almost all the boys enlisted in the service. This book describes each boy’s enlistment and story in the service until the war ended. The book tells the individual story of many of the team members and what they did to help defend the United States during WWII. It tells of their courage, bravery, and their total disregard for their own welfare. It is remarkable how one group of boys all dedicated their lives to fight Japan to avenge the attack on Pearl Harbor. As Americans became more aware of Hitler’s depredations, anti-fascism was another driving force for these young Americans to fight and risk their lives. The Fabulous Flushing Boys, in particular, tells the story of one of these boys who joined the coast guard and sent letters home to his girlfriend, documenting his service until the war was over in 1945.
