I did not set out to write this book because I had a tidy answer to offer. I set out to write it because I kept noticing a gap between what retiring teachers were actually going through and what most retirement books seemed willing to talk about.

Teaching is not a career like most others. It asks for a version of yourself to show up, live, and be dependable, in front of a room full of people who need you to be steady, year after year, for decades. Leaving that behind is not the same as leaving a desk job, and I wanted to write something that took that difference seriously, rather than assuming a retired teacher’s experience would look the same as anyone else’s.This book draws on research into the specific financial realities retired educators face, conversations and patterns gathered from people who have lived through this exact transition, and a genuine belief that identity and income, for a retired teacher, are rarely separate problems. They tend to arrive together, and I think they are best addressed together.

The stories throughout this book- Margaret, Frank, Diane, Robert, Carol, James, and Susan- are composites, built from patterns seen again and again rather than from any single real person. I chose to write them this way deliberately, so the book could speak honestly to a wide range of experiences without claiming to tell any one individual’s private story. If you are holding this book because you are somewhere in the middle of this transition yourself, disoriented, or worried about money, or both, I hope what follows feels less like advice from a distance and more like a steady, honest hand extended toward exactly where you are.

Most books written for retirees fall into one of two categories. Some focus entirely on the emotional side of the transition, offering comfort and reflection but very little practical direction. Others focus entirely on money, treating retirement as a spreadsheet problem to be solved with the right budget or investment strategy, while ignoring the very real disorientation that so often accompanies the loss of a professional identity. This book takes a different approach, because after spending real time talking with and learning from retired teachers, one thing became clear: for most people leaving a teaching career, identity and income are not two separate problems. These are the same problems, wearing two different hats. The anxiety about money often makes the identity loss feel heavier, and the identity loss often makes the money questions feel more urgent and more frightening than they need to be. Solve only one, and the other tends to linger, unresolved, in the background of daily life.
